Saturation

Saturation is the intensity of a color and is defined by how much white light is contained in a specific hue. Highly saturated colors appear bright and pure, 5 in 1 spotlight while low-saturated colors are softer and closer to gray. For example, a pure red has high saturation, while a pink with equal amounts of blue and yellow has lower saturation.

Slight changes to the brightness and/or chroma of an image can drastically alter its saturation. As a result, when editing images it is important to be cautious of how saturation is adjusted as over-saturated photos can look unnatural and overdone.

The CIE definition of saturation is based on the ratio between a color’s brightness and its chroma. However, the term saturation can also refer to a single attribute of the color appearance (such as lightness or colorfulness) and not the ratio of those attributes.

On a Munsell hue page, colors of uniform saturation lie along lines that radiate from the zero point on the value scale, in contrast to those with uniform chroma which are vertical. (Fig. 1.7.3).

The vibrance tool in photo editing applications is a great way to adjust an image’s saturation. The vibrance slider enhances color saturation by enhancing the darker tones and leaving the lighter tones more subtle. The vibrance tool is especially useful when working with portraits as it prevents oversaturated skin tones.

Color Temperature

A white light’s color temperature is measured in Kelvins. It’s an essential aspect of a light because it affects how your space feels and how you feel in the room.

Warmer colors, like 2700K and 3000K, have a more yellow tone. They’re great for ambient lighting in homes or commercial spaces and create a cozy environment. Cooler color temperatures, such as 4000K and 5000K, have a more neutral or blue tint. They’re more appropriate for kitchens, offices or workspaces that require detail-oriented work and are more comfortable for the eyes during the day.

When choosing a color temperature, consider your personal preferences and the materials in your home or office. For example, if you have many natural materials like wood floors, tongue and groove ceilings or furniture made of browns, tans and oranges, warmer LED color temperatures might be best to complement them. However, if your home is filled with modern Offroad Led Light Bar decor and bright white furnishings, then a cooler LED color temperature might better match the look you’re going for.

It’s also important to note that some LED lights will emit a lot of blue light, which is not good for your eyes and can cause digital eye strain. This is why it’s important to choose a light that limits blue emission, such as the Redgrass R9 Desk lamp.
